To read books free online go to books.google.com. Last year they boasted 10 million scanned books. You can read public domain and out-of-print books in entirety. Newer books have varying amounts you can read. Many newer books will have almost the whole book available, while others will have only snippets. For example, my son is about to read Return to Gone Away Lake, and it has every chapter but one. Their goal is to have every book ever printed, including ancient texts available online.

Join us on Tuesday, March 23 (that's the fourth Tuesday of this month) at 1:00 for a program focused on money and saving! Presenter Justin Zammit, a Financial Advisor at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, will start with a segment on money and play a trading game with the kids. He will then cover how to earn money, pay for necessities, and decide between spending now and saving for the future. The final segment will allow the children pick something they want to save for and make a plan to earn income and achieve their goal. This program will probably last about 45 minutes, and will be most appropriate for ages 7-12, though all ages are welcome.

Field Trip: Special showing of Lewis and Clark at the Ft. Worth IMAX

Sally Verando is putting a field trip together for the IMAX movie Lewis & Clark: Great Journey West at the Ft. Worth Museum of Science and History on Tues., Apr. 6 at 10 a.m. This is a 40-minute film not currently shown to the public. It is available only for field trips, recommended for grades 4 - 12. We need a minimum of 12 people--adults and children--for our group. Cost is $3.50 per child 3 -12; $5 per adult; free for children under 3.

To visit the museum or planetarium will cost extra at the school rate.

Museum: additional $5 for children (3-12), $10 adults

Planetarium: additional $2.50 children (3-12), $4.50 adults

Planetarium times available are 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. These shows book fast so the deadline for the planetarium is Thurs., Mar. 18. Even then, I can't guarantee that it won't already be filled up. Deadline for movie and museum visits is Wed., Mar. 31.

Below is a description of the film and a "clip 'n' mail" form for you to fill out and attach your payment. Please fill out completely and mail the form, especially if you want to go to the planetarium. Address is on form below. I will also have a drop-off envelope at co-op after Spring Break.

Lewis & Clark: Great Journey West

At dawn of our nation, two courageous captains of the U.S. Army led a mission of 31 explorers from the mouth of the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean and back. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark pushed their Corps of Discovery --which included a heroic Native American woman, Sacagawea, and her infant son -- to the limits of endurance. Theirs was a grueling journey through thick forests and raging rapids, over towering peaks and plunging precipices. It was a treacherous 8,000-mile trek that was survived thanks to the grace and generosity of the Native Americans who inhabited this unmapped land.

On March 2, award-winning author Marty Essen presents

his high-energy digital slide show, Around the World in 90 Minutes, at

Eastfield College.

Marty’s show features interesting facts, humorous stories, and the best

of thousands of photos he took while traveling the world for his book,

Cool Creatures, Hot Planet: Exploring the Seven Continents. It's the

My house is full of pirates and princesses;

fencing in the hall,

dancing through the kitchen.

My husband calls,

"Avast! Prepare to defend against boarders!"

But we were invaded long ago by the little people.

Sometimes a flotilla of laundry-basket boats lines the living room.

Sometimes there is darkness at noon,

while cowboys sleep in tents on the prairie.

Today, the peasant girls are singing,

carrying cornfeed in their aprons

to feed the indoor chickens.

Just before lunch, Daniel Boone rode into town

with a small bear thrown across his horse,

(a bear that looked a lot like his baby sister

in a panda hat).

It used to be more boring around here.

There used to be a bunch of hollering kids,

pulling all the cushions off my couch,

strewing clothes,

dropping ice and jelly on the floor,

avoiding their schoolwork,

oblivious to law and order.

But then, one day,

I saw the fairies come to play,

and they brought with them

those handsome stagecoach drivers,

ridin' hard to outpace robbers,

hot on the Sundance Trail.

One day, I'm sure they'll all ride off into the sunset,

leaving my living room and kitchen

all in perfect order.

One of America's most-famous and most-beloved astronauts, Ride became the first American woman in space when she joined the STS-7 crew on June 18, 1983.

At the time, she was also the youngest American (32)—male or female—ever to enter space. Ride flew two Shuttle missions, totaling more than two weeks in space.

In the wake of the 1986 Challenger disaster, Ride was named to the Presidential Commission investigating the accident and authored NASA's first strategic plan. She also served on the Space Shuttle Columbia Accident Investigation Board in 2003.

Sally Ride is now a professor of physics at the University of California at San Diego and is president and CEO of Sally Ride Science, which focuses on getting children, especially girls, interested in science.

Ride's lecture is part of the Maverick Speaker's Series and coincides with the 50th Anniversary celebration of UT Arlington's College of Engineering.

Homeschooling Through Grief

I came across this article in a website I frequent. It is written by Julie Bogart, the author of the Brave Writer curriculum. Maybe you could pass it on to a homeschooler who is experiencing loss.

Grief is such a strange thing. You can be perfectly calm at a memorial service and then burst into tears in the supermarket line. You feel energetic from a good night’s rest, but can’t remember phone numbers. Your brain feels scrambled. Sometimes you’re living under water, all actions slow motion and blurry, hard work, yet the pain is dull not sharp. Then guilt jumps you and you wonder why you can’t pull yourself together to get things done when you’ve already cried your tears and the event that triggered the grief was so long ago (whatever amount of time that is: six hours, four weeks, one year).

Homeschooling under those conditions is grueling. You feel responsible yet unable. It happens to school teachers too. My American Literature teacher in 11th grade lost his fiance in a freak tidal wave on the California coast. It derailed our class for the rest of the year. He spent one session telling us the vivid details of what happened to her, through his tears. From that day on (early fall), he never did get himself together. We limped our way through The Great Gatsby, Steinbeck and Hemingway without much insight or clearly defined writing projects. He missed many classes. Yet we survived. He did too.

One benefit to homeschooling is that you literally are in a house. Taking breaks, napping, crying in the bathroom are more viable than in a school setting. Remember that. Give yourself a break. Additionally, if you’re grieving the loss of someone in the family dear to you (as you are Kelly), chances are your kids are too. They can understand if you say, “I need this morning to just lie down and rest because I’m sad.”

I’ve been through one of the toughest years of my life (2009). My grief was not induced by death, but it’s been a process of loss anyway. I can’t say I survived it well, but I will share with you a few things I know about living with grief and adjusting homeschool to that unhappy rhythm.

“You can’t cheat the dark gods.” If you’re sad, you’re sad. Don’t pretend not to be or it will squirt out in irritability or anger when one of your kids spills the orange juice or giggles too loudly. If you feel blank and unfocused, chances are supporting a rigorous routine will elude you. Then you will heap guilt on your already weary spirit. Start by recognizing that you’re in a process that will take some time to get through. Acknowledge your feelings, in a journal if nothing else, and find ways to slow down the pace of life to accommodate your sadness.

Get a support system. Don’t rely on your kids to talk to you or to help you through the blues. Pick a friend you can call any time of day or night. Then talk to that person. Or if you prefer, create an email dialog with someone who understands your pain. Exchange emails. Don’t keep your emotions in. Find an outlet of support. (Hint: Husband may not be the best person for this if he is going through a similar grieving process.)

Pace yourself. This is when it helps a lot to go back to basics. What aspects of homeschool are most nurturing to all of you? What can you do with your kids that is the lowest stress? I found that reading aloud was a great way to stay on track and to be restful. I also liked using DVDs and the computer for some of our education. I relied more on tutors and group learning (co-op) so that I wasn’t in charge of so much. Remember: you can catch up next year. No need to press too hard this year.

Go vanilla. This is not the year for glitzy memorable unit studies complete with parties and field trips. Think 3 R’s. How can you keep reading, ‘riting and ‘rithematic going? Let history and science slide (if your kids are not in high school). If they are in high school, rely more on self-study and movies, group learning and tutors (if you can). Recognize that sometimes just keeping up with the basics is about all you can muster, but it is enough. Some years, it’s more than enough. Teatimes are one way to keep a routine that is nurturing. See if these can continue to be in your weekly lifestyle without too much stress.

Let them watch some TV and play computer games. I know, I know. That sounds so cynical. Here’s something I know from experience. Kids learn because that’s what they do. I’ve discovered from having been through a rough year myself that my kids have learned stuff I never taught them from Seinfeld episodes, from reality TV, from music (spending big quantities of time listening to and copying lyrics). Your kids need space to recover too, so let them do some of these “lesser forms of learning” without guilt. Remember the summers of your youth when you vegged out all day watching game shows or old movies? It’s okay. They’ll be okay. A little bit of learning combined with a lot of technology and TV for a period of time (a season) may be the easiest way to recover from such a blow as losing your mother. You’ll all get restless and sick of that lifestyle when your energy revives. You will. Trust it.

Deliberately take time for you. Get away from the house, the family, your responsibilities. If you can spend time each week alone at a library or in nature or at a spiritual center, do it. I go to church alone (my kids go to a different church). In warm weather, I take time after church to go to a look out over the Ohio river. I read, journal, sit quietly, and watch coal barges float by. In the cold weather, I ski each week. Be good to you. Restore yourself. Love yourself.

Evaluate your recovery not by days or weeks, but by months and quarters. Change your measurements to longer spans of time. If you get a writing project done per quarter or maybe per semester, be glad. Affirm what you do. Ignore what you don’t do.

Over time, you’ll heal. You’ll know you’re healing because your energy will rebound. As it does, add in some of the missing pieces. But don’t be afraid to throw stuff out or to have a month where you lapse. Grief isn’t linear. It’s cyclical. You can get a lot of energy back and then one visit from family can send you back into the spiral. And of course, if you find that your grief turns into depression, you know (I’m sure!) to get professional help. Therapy has helped me tremendously and sometimes anti-depressants are the difference between drowning and swimming to safety.

Here’s hoping that each day gets a little better for you, just as the sun’s rays are lengthening a little bit every evening.

Hello all! It is time to let you know how we are doing in our boxtops campaign. The website has updated our earnings, and I am happy to report that we have been mailed a check for $129.33!!!!! This is great news! This came mostly from families being diligent to clip the boxtops off items already in our homes. The only cost is the time of clipping! I am also excited to report that approximately $5 of this came from marketplace purchases. This was only from two families shopping. I have purchased through there multiple times and I am telling you it is so easy to do. Many times it comes with a coupon code or special offer just through the website.

Thank you to all who have taken the time to contribute to this fundraiser. Our goal for this school year is $500. I believe we can do it. There are 23 families registered at the boxtops website. SALT Kids Volunteer at Homeless Daycare

Last night, thirteen SALT students and parents helped entertain children who have recently been homeless at the Vogel Alcove near downtown Dallas. We sang Christmas carols, played games, and worked puzzles with the kids. We also got to visit with the moms, who all seem to be doing a good job with their kids. The children were very sweet and smart.

Afterwards we made s'mores at Tillman's Roadhouse in the Bishop Arts District.

We know that most families are very busy this time of year, however a couple of hours off may help moms/dads relax and the children have some free time. Next, Friday, December 11 at 12p-2p Redbird Skate will open for us. The rate will be determined by the amount of skaters. For example, if we have at least 40 skaters it will be $5/skater and that includes the skates. If we have more than 40 the amount will be less. Please RSVP so that we can get a count. The rink is located at 1206 N. Duncanville Rd, Duncanville, TX. The rink is right off Interstate 20 pass Spur 408. I know some of you don't leave in the Duncanville area, but just wanted to invite you anyway.

Free Writing Workshops for Teens

Moving Words Writing Camps are a series of tuition-free one-hour writing camps taught by local writers who assist teens in the art of creative writing. Each one-hour camp will focus on either Fiction, Poetry or Playwriting. The camps are presented by the Dallas Public Library system and Thriving Minds, with the classes being taught by Junior Players' teaching artists. (You don't have to live in Dallas to participate.)

Opportunity to Serve Homeless Kids

On Thursday night, December 17, the Coleman family is going to host a simple party for children who have recently been homeless. We will be at the Vogel Alcove, a day care center for homeless children in Dallas. Their parents will be in the building in another room choosing Christmas gifts for their kids. We will be entertaining the children.

Let me (Kristi) know if you would like to join us. You could bring a favorite Christmas book to read to them or a game to play or a snack.

The Home School Reflections Concert Choir (an 80 voice choir comprised of home schoolers from the DFW metroplex who have had distinguished honors of singing at such events as the Veterans Day Celebration in Downtown Dallas and the DFW Nat’l Memorial Cemetery, the Rep. Celebrate the season and have a Sunday “fun day” filled with free museum visits, a Dallas Wind Symphony Quintet concert, arts and crafts, kids activities, Holiday Market presented by The 500 Inc., entertainment and more at MetroPCS Fair Park Holiday on December 6, from 2 – 7 p.m.

Come see the unveiling of the newly renovated “Bellagio-style” Esplanade Fountain. Also, two original recreations of the 1936 sculptures will be introduced – Tenor and Contralto, which adorned the Esplanade Fountain during the Texas Centennial Exposition. Armed with 272 jets shooting water as high as 100 feet, the Esplanade Fountain will paint the skies with “dancing water” performances synchronized to music throughout the day.

Other highlights of MetroPCS Fair Park Holiday include free admission to all Fair Park museums from 3 – 6 p.m., a holiday concert by the Dallas Wind Symphony Quintet at 4:30 p.m. and the official City of Dallas Tree-Lighting Ceremony at 6 p.m., which includes a special candlelight tribute to the men and women serving in all branches of the U.S. military and a special Esplanade Fountain water show featuring holiday music.

Mini Cake Balls

I learned an easy holiday treat from a chef this week. Mini cake balls are all the rage with the Neiman's catalogue customers. The Highland Park baker who supplies Neiman's has shared the recipe, and it's very easy. All you need is a boxed cake mix, a tub of icing, chocolate for dipping, and something to roll them in. Think toffee chips or toasted pecans.

Get creative with the combinations of cake flavors and icings.

Homemade Kettle Corn

Here's an easy snack for a relaxing game night over the holidays.

Put 2 Tablespoons of oil and 1/4 cup popcorn in a pan over medium/high heat. When the first kernal pops, sprinkle on 2 Tablespoons of granulated sugar. Cover and shake continuously. Empty from pan quickly after it finishes popping. Salt to taste.

Martha Stewart says to used powdered sugar, but I've never tried that.

Fun Race for the Family

Each Saturday before the White Rock Marathon is the Mayor's Race that starts at Dallas City Hall. This is a three mile race that you can walk or run, and it a great way to introduce your kids to running. After the race, you can stroll through the health and fitness booths at the Convention Center that are set up for the White Rock Marathon. Personal testimony: last year the race and the exhibits got me pumped up about fitness, and I've exercised just about every day since then!

It's $20 for the whole family to race, and you get a t-shirt plus a lot of other goodies.

The World of Rocks

"The World of Rocks" is the theme for the 52nd annual Dallas Gem and Mineral Show. This is a great opportunity for your kids to learn about geology from experts with wonderful specimens to see and touch. It's this weekend, November 21 and 22 in Mesquite.

The weekend will feature many exhibits to keep your kids interested and learning: rocks and rare specimens, handmade jewelry, fossils, amber, arrowheads, polished gems, open your own geodes and agates, games, demonstrations, kids mine and a flourescent rock display. There will even be a class for scouts to earn their geology badge.

Cost: $8, Kids 4 - 12: $3, Family of four or more: $20, Scouts and leaders in uniform: free.
